Our story
The Portway Rugby Development Centre (RDC) was opened in October 2006, with initial funding from Bristol City Council, Sport England, and the Rugby Football Union (RFU). The aim was to provide a dedicated facility for local schools and rugby clubs in Bristol.
Although the site didn’t initially reach its full potential, its promise has always been clear. In 2024, St Brendan’s Old Boys RFC took over the facility, bringing fresh energy and focus to its development. With plans to secure further investment, the club is committed to revitalising the centre to not only fulfil its original goals of promoting rugby but also to open the space to other community sports clubs. By doing so, the RDC will become a vibrant, multi-sport hub that benefits the entire local community, supporting a variety of athletes and sports.

Future Development
The Portway Rugby Development Centre (RDC) is entering an exciting new chapter. With St Brendan’s Old Boys RFC now involved, plans are in motion to turn the site into a vibrant multi-sport hub for the local community.
Key upgrades will focus on enhancing the playing pitches and training areas, creating facilities that can support a range of sports. New changing rooms and social spaces will be created to provide a comfortable and welcoming environment for both players and visitors.
Alongside the physical upgrades, the RDC is committed to widening access to sport and creating opportunities for everyone in the community to get involved. By partnering with local schools, community groups, and sports clubs, the centre will ensure that people of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities have the chance to participate in sport, develop their skills, and stay active in a welcoming and supportive environment.
With additional investment and new partnerships on the horizon, the RDC will continue to develop and strengthen its role as a hub for sport, fitness, and community engagement in Bristol.
